The Electricity Cost of Driving 35,000 Miles in a Model 3

I just recently hit 35k miles on the odometer of my Model 3. I do have my second trip meter locked in for the Lifetime power usage of the car, and this is where most other people will pull the number from, multiply it by how cheap their home charging kWh price is, take nothing else into account and give a rough electricity cost. That doesn’t give the entire story though.

Tesla Fest East 2019

Not so much hot laps, but luke warm laps

This past Saturday, October 26th, 2019 was Tesla Fest East at NCCAR hosted by Out of Spec Motoring. Many Model 3 owners showed up to take their car on the track and experience what the car can really do, as well as a handful of Model S and Model X vehicles.

Owners came from locations far and wide including California, Chicago, New Hampshire and Florida to join in on the festivities. Track mode claimed many many tires lives that day. Many amps as well.

Tesla Model 3 – 2019.24.4 Power Usage

With the wider release of the 2019.24.4 firmware update, Tesla seems to have changed how leaving your car plugged in behaves.

Plugged In Power Usage
Tesla Model 3 Plugged In Power Usage

In my very limited 2 days of observation so far, the new 2019.24.4 behavior keeps the car at your desired charge limit even hours after charging completes. To achieve this, more functions seem to run off wall power, one such being the cabin overheat protection.

iPhone 5 vs HTC One S: Camera Preview

So the iPhone 5 is now available to the masses and while every tech site compares the phone to the other big boys (Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X) I figured it would be cool to compare it to my new phone, the HTC One S. I’ll get into more detail between the two phones in another post but for now I’ll compare the camera and video capabilities of each.

All of these were taken right at my computer desk so nothing super technical about them and all pictures were taken with the stock default settings; open the camera app from the lock screen and shoot a picture, leaving the camera to auto focus on its own. NOTE: the iPhone 5 takes pictures in 4:3 aspect ratio so the HTC One S was changed from its default 16:9 to 4:3 to match.

Nexus 7 Impressions

So as I lay here in bed, typing away on my Nexus 7, I must admit that I’m VERY impressed. My Motorola Xoom WiFi was cool when it came out and I’m actually shocked it received jelly bean so fast but the hardware started to feel a bit outdated. Launching chrome and waiting for web pages to load in their tabs took ages and made me just pull out my retina macbook pro instead. Constant stuttering and unresponsive screen swipes also were annoying, as well as the weight being too much to work on comfortably without shifting the device every few minutes.

Enter the Nexus 7. Same resolution, half the weight and size much more comfortable and easier to grasp single handedly. This is the tablet sweet spot in my opinion. I supposed I’ll still use the Xoom for moves and music since I just recently bought the dock but as far as everything else, my Nexus 7 is the new go to device.

Once I get some more time in with it on a more daily basis I’ll post details on my findings.

T-Mobile G2x First Impressions

Well well well, what do we have here? I never imagined a cellphone having multiple cores but here we are with the G2x rocking a Tegra 2 dual core chip. In a cellphone. What is going on!

Just as something to hold me over until the HTC Sensation comes out, the G2x is a pretty nice step up from my G2. The 4″ screen should make transitioning to the Sensations 4.3″ easier (from the 3.7″ on the G2) and hopefully help me get rid of my best friend that is the BlackBerry Bold 9780.

iPhone 4: New design, still a 3G iPod touch

Cya iphone, its been fun. I have a new touchscreen to replace you called the G2. I tried to give you another chance on multiple occasions but you just could never make the cut. Now that angry birds is making its way onto android phones, you’re dead to me.

I never wrote a serious review for the iPhone 4 like I said I would but that’s because I really hate the device as a phone. The apps are great, web browser is almost perfect and the battery lasts at least a day now (from what I can tell at least, since I never really could commit an entire day to using it exclusively) but those factors are not enough. Coming from blackberry os I expect my phone to do certain things which the iPhone does not. Some of the big ones for me are push email for every email address, call logs that go back more then only the last call, a hardware keyboard, louder speakerphone, louder earpiece, bluetooth remote functions, a better notification system…the list can go on forever. Its very annoying to see a notification on screen then unlock the phone without realizing it popped up and having no idea where it came from.

Even as an iPod I don’t really care too much for the phone. Bluetooth headphones can’t control changing songs and the on screen media keys require you to have the device out instead of just hitting a button while its tucked away in a belt clip or in a coat pocket like I can do with my bold.

Overall the phone is a step up from the 3G and 3GS in terms of battery life but for what I expect my cellphone to do, it doesn’t make the cut nor do I think it ever will. The phone has sold this many units thus far, why would Apple drastically change it up now?
